My mother and so many of her generation struggled to straddle the divide between the post-war suburban boom in the 1950s and the social change of the 1960s and 1970s.

Women wrestled with the expectation of being the primary caretaker of children, husband, and the home while also building a career. In the 1950s, women made up approximately one-third of the labor force, while today, that number is nearly fifty percent. This shift in employment increased financial independence for women and more options.

When I was in middle school, I overheard an argument between my divorcing parents. The separation had been acrimonious, to say the least. On that cloudy late spring day, I overheard my father say, “You will never make it without me.” And my mother’s response, “Watch me.” And she did.
